51st Street Bridge over I-90/94

51st Street is an arterial street over an urban interstate. Interstate 90/94 has 12 traffic lanes, access and exit ramps, and two-lane frontage roads on both the east- and west-bound sides. The CTA electric rapid transit train tracks occupy the median.

Chicago's Department of Transportation (CDOT) contracted Bowman, Barrett & Associates Inc. to provide Phase III Construction Engineering services for the reconstruction of the 51st Street Bridge over the Dan Ryan Expressway (1-94).

The replacement project included the bridge piers, abutments, and superstructure, as well as the approach street paving, underground utilities, curb and gutter, driveways, sidewalks, striping, traffic signals, landscaping and all miscellaneous and collateral items.

Specific duties of the resident engineer included:

  • Shop drawing review
  • Construction inspection
  • Coordination of on-site and plant materials testing
  • Preparation of daily, weekly and monthly progress reports
  • Processing of contractors' pay requests
  • Processing of change order requests
  • Project correspondence
  • Documentation
  • Coordination of contractors' activities with utility companies
