BB&A provided structural design and contract plan preparation for this value engineering change proposal for the Bruce Road Bridge over the new 12.5 mile, six-lane south extension of the Veteran's Memorial Tollway (I-355) in Will County, Illinois. Bruce bridge is a new two-span grade separation structure.
BB&A's design of Bruce bridge called for span lengths of just over 119 feet, whereas traditional designs would have had a limit of approximately 105 feet.
BB&A's innovative design included:
- Substituting the original steel plate girders with widely spaced 120-foot-long modified 63-inch PPC Bulb-T beams spliced over the pier without post-tensioning. This was accomplished in part by using 8,000 psi concrete.
- Beam lifting and shipping stability analyses.
- Making girders continuous for all dead and live loads (except the beams' self-weight) by coupling dywidag bars in the top flange to splice them over the piers.
