Chicago Skyway at the 106th Street Viaduct

> Chicago Skyway > I-80 Over Fox River
> Hillside Road Bridge > DuPage Bridge Inspection

Allowing traffic to bypass the congested Dan Ryan Expressway, the 7.8 mile elevated Chicago Skyway provides commuters with an alternate route between downtown Chicago and Indiana. When steadily increasing usage necessitated improvements, the City of Chicago retained Bowman, Barrett & Associates Inc. to review the condition of the portion of the Skyway known as the 106th Street Viaduct and prepare plans for its repair and reconstruction.

BB&A's recommendations included:

  • Removal of the existing structure between Ewing Avenue/100th Street and the state line, replacing it with embankment and PCC pavement
  • Construction of a tunnel at 105th Street for northbound ramp access
  • Relocation and reconstruction of the southbound off-ramp to 104th Street
  • Rehabilitation of the existing structure at the Indiana state line
  • Reconstruction of Indianapolis Boulevard including lighting, traffic signals, and landscaping

The project was constructed in stages, thus maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction at all times. Construction was completed on schedule and within the Engineer's Construction Cost Estimate.
