BB&A provided structural design and contract plan preparation for this value engineering change proposal for the Gougar Road Bridge over the new 12.5 mile, six-lane south extension of the Veteran's Memorial Tollway (I-355) in Will County, Illinois. Gougar bridge is a new two-span grade separation structure.
Working in conjunction with Janssen & Spaans, BB&A designed Gougar bridge with span lengths of 203 feet.
This design employed mid-span splicing where the girder segments are erected on temporary shoring towers and post-tensioned in stages.
The project included substituting the original 4-span, 200', 230', 230', and 200' steel girder system with a 2-span structure utilizing 90-inch spliced post-tensioned PPC beams.
The originally intended end spans were replaced with embankments and the cast-in-place concrete wingwalls were replaced with MSE walls.
