BB&A was retained by IDOT to perform Phase I studies and Phase II design services for the rehabilitation/replacement of I-80 over the Fox River as part of a larger project consisting of approximately 1300 feet of widening and rehabilitation of I-80 in LaSalle County.
BB&A performed an in-depth field inspection of the existing steel multi-girder bridge and prepared detailed Bridge Condition Reports identifying possible rehabilitation methods that would accommodate a widened deck. In addition, BB&A prepared a Hydraulic Report and a Project Report outlining the design criteria, environmental issues, and probable construction costs.
The structure was completely replaced. The steel stringer superstructure was replaced with multiple precast, prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders with span lengths extending to approximately 135 feet. The entire length of superstructure—680 feet—had only two expansion joints. New single-shaft hammerhead piers (some as tall as 70 feet) were constructed to accommodate the new span arrangement. The center two piers were fixed to help reduce the number and size of deck expansion joints. Abutments were stub type on piles.
In addition, approach roadway reconstruction was necessary on either end and between the two structures. Vertical profile adjustments were made to correct prior deficiencies.
