63rd and State (Englewood) Flyover

IDOT and Metra

Chicago, Illinois

BB&A partnered with TranSystems Corporation for the design of a grade separation structure between the Metra Rock Island District and existing Norfolk Southern/Amtrak and the future Canadian National high-speed rail corridors. BB&A was responsible for the preliminary and final design of 4 bridges and 5 retaining walls to accommodate the new rail/rail flyover. In addition, several existing bridges needed to be lifted to meet the new track grade. BB&A provided recommendations based on the types of bridges needed to achieve the desired effects with the track alignment and profile. Often, BB&A recommended the re-use of existing spans in order to save the cost of replacing or moving existing spans. Throughout the duration of construction, all commuter and freight railroad lines will be kept in service.
