Sixty percent of the viaduct's elevated structure was lowered, and its substructure was replaced with embankment supported by MSE retaining walls. Lowering this portion of the Skyway onto embankment, in lieu of an in-kind replacement of the existing steel structure, doubled its service life and significantly reduced future maintenance costs.
