John E. Barrett, PE, SE

Retired Vice Chairman

As the cofounder of Bowman, Barrett & Associates Inc. (BB&A), John E. Barrett, PE, SE served as the Vice Chairman of the organization. With over 60 years of experience, he earned accolades for his innovative and effective approach to railroad bridge design projects. Known as an authority on structural issues, Mr. Barrett was highly regarded in the industry for his knowledge and expertise.

Mr. Barrett earned a BSCE degree from the University of Illinois and was an active member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association. He was instrumental in establishing the Bowman, Barrett & Associates Outstanding Scholar Award, presented each year to an exceptional engineering student at the University studying either transportation or structural engineering.

Mr. Barrett was actively involved with many industry organizations and committees, including: SEAOI (Recipient of the John F. Palmer Award), AREMA (Past Chairman, Life Member and Member Emeritus Committee 15, Steel Structures; Member, Committee 9, Seismic Design for Railway Structures), AISC, ASCE, ASTM, AWS, NSPE, and is a past Member, Board of Directors for University of Illinois Civil Engineering Alumni Association.

Mr. Barrett has also donated his time and expertise to the community as a technical advisor at Benito Juarez High School in Chicago, helping to develop programs that will encourage students to further their education.

John Barrett is a busy family man as well. He and his late wife Belva (Beverly) are the parents of John, Cynthia, Thomas, Joseph, David and Beth. He resides in Palos Park, Illinois where his fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren love to visit.
