Community Involvement
Since the firm’s inception, Bowman, Barrett & Associates
(BB&A) has worked to educate young people on the engineering
profession. The company sponsors scholarship programs, employs
and mentors future engineers, educates students on the profession
and staff serves in leadership roles.
Benito Juarez High School, Chicago, Illinois
Bowman, Barrett & Associates became involved with the Education
to Careers (ETC) Program in 1989 by adopting the Benito Juarez
High School in Chicago. John Barrett serves as the Technical Advisor
from BB&A for the firm. The firm has provided employment to
11 students from Benito Juarez since participation began with this
program.
BB&A provides equipment, technical books and magazines to the
school. The firm employs high school students with strong abilities
in math and science to serve as assistants. As Technical Advisor,
Mr. Barrett speaks at school events and answers student’s
questions on the engineering profession. Other engineers have also
been involved with this effort and Beth Holland serves as the Student
Supervisor from BB&A for the firm.
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Illinois
Many of the professionals working at Bowman, Barrett & Associates
received BS and/or MS degrees in engineering from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). The UIUC civil engineering
program is a nationally ranked program and graduates of the program
are in high demand.
BB&A actively recruits full-time employees and interns each
year from the UIUC engineering program. Both Mr. Barrett and Mr.
Bowman have served terms on the Civil Engineering Alumni Association
Board at UIUC. Staff members have regularly participated in the
student-mentor program and the firm has sponsored many of the engineering
activities at UIUC, including the ASCE Concrete Canoe Project and
the University of Illinois Steel Bridge Team.
In addition, the company annually sponsors the Bowman, Barrett & Associates
Outstanding Scholar Award in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
The award was first presented by BB&A in the spring of 1996.
The recipient is required to be of junior status and selected on
the basis of leadership and the highest scholastic average for
course work completed in the third, fourth and fifth semesters
of the curriculum for civil engineering.
