CN Bridge 64.76 Bridge
over Coldwater River
Client: Canadian National Railroad
Location: Marks, Mississippi
The Canadian National Railroad retained Bowman, Barrett & Associates (BB&A) to furnish repair plans for a two-span movable swing bridge over Coldwater River in Marks, Mississippi.
Constructed in 1902, the bridge was badly in need of repair due to damage from railroad impacts and corrosion, and the repair was made more difficult because no original plans existed. Following a thorough inspection, BB&A determined that the existing framing plan over the drum pier was no longer useful and would have to be updated to meet current design standards. A traction frame and new fixed bearings were designed to direct loads from the drum pier.
In addition, because Coldwater River is no longer used as an avenue for transportation and commerce, the bridge did not need to be operable as a swing bridge. As a result BB&A modified the existing bridge to have two separate, independent spans by eliminating the stringers over the drum pier and reconfiguring the floor system between the two spans.
