NS Bridge PC 0.97
over Federal Street
Client: Norfolk Southern Railroad
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Construction Cost: $2.5 Million
Challenge
The Norfolk Southern Railroad crosses Federal Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on a bridge that is over 100 years old. This location once had a passenger station that has since been demolished, but because the viaduct structure carries active tracks, it was retained. The railroad recently decided to demolish the aging viaduct, the deterioration of which had caused it to become a liability.
Details
Bowman, Barrett & Associates was retained to design new walls for the south and north sides of the railroad property, along with a new west abutment to carry the existing west sidewalk girders, which are to remain. The old viaduct structure will then be removed in two stages, and the space enclosed by the new walls and abutment can be filled with earth.
BB&A kept aesthetics in mind by including decorative overhangs in design of the walls, as well as incorporating horizontal and vertical striping to create visual interest.
