BB&A provided complete reconstruction design services for 3.9 miles of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88), including the interchange with IL Route 53. The interchange connects the Tollway with the Village of Lisle and the Morton Arboretum, an outdoor museum covering 1,700 acres.

The bridge signage welcoming visitors to the Morton Arboretum and the Village of Lisle with leaf patterns built-in to the face of the wall. A 3D scan of actual live leaves was used to make the form liners for the 6'x6' detail copies.

An existing loop ramp in the northwest quadrant was kept in use during staged construction. After the first stage (2 lanes) of the eastbound mainline and bridge was completed and open to traffic, a counterflow lane (third eastbound lane) was in use on the existing westbound side of the mainline protected by a temporary barrier median wall.

After completion the loop ramp in the northwest quadrant was removed and replaced with a stormwater detention basin.

In this detail of traffic crossing the I-88 bridge over IL Route 53, the split profile is evident in the height of the bridge parapet along the centerline. The split profile reduced the cost of roadway embankment and the bridge substructure.

Large leaf patterns are built into the face of the retaining wall along the Morton Arboretum and westbound exit ramp.
